Competitive Start

I am interested in the perceived need in English culture for competition and comparison. This body of work focuses on the fine line in children's competitive sport of, on the one hand, instilling ambition, self-confidence and 'how to play the game' and, on the other, planting the seed of future feelings of inadequacy and insecurity as self worth is set up to be dependent on what others achieve. This can create tension in the individual and lead to feelings of what Alain de Botton (2004) has described as Status Anxiety.
